Ear Infections :(
Poor Silas went back to the doctor today after a weekend of very little sleep. He seemed to be feeling fine during the day, but at night, he would wake up crying 20 minutes after falling asleep. It would take him 45 minutes to an hour to get back to sleep, and then he'd wake up again. Basically, we were up with him every hour all weekend. It was tough. It was also confusing because, once morning came, we had our smiley, happy boy back. We now know that is a classic sign of an ear infection, but we just knew our boy was not happy. So, we went to the pediatrician first thing this morning. Sure enough, he has infections in both ears--the right worse than the left. He's on antibiotics now, and will hopefully be feeling better soon. The cleft doctor explained to us that Silas will be especially prone to middle ear infections because the muscle that controls the eustachian tubes does not function properly in cleft babies. That is why we expect him to be getting ear tubes inserted in short order. I sure hope he doesn't have to endure too many more ear infections before then.

We hope he feels better soon and that you all are sleeping well tonight!
ReplyDeletepoor little guy. ear infections are tough!! my non cleft son had 13 in 12 months when he was a baby!! Our Dan Dan has otitis, but so far it is just fluid not infection (knock on wood). He just had his lip repair but we couldn't get an E N T in time to do the tubes. Frustrating!!! Hang in there !!
ReplyDeleteJen, when Jack had recurring ear infections only children's Advil or Motrin worked for him...the Tylenol didn't do a thing for the pain or his fever...You might want to try that. I think every person is different on how they react to the pain medications - and the latest info on Tylenol i could find was that scientists still don't even know the mechanism of how it works..??!!
